May I ask a too-simple question? How justified are we in assuming that origins are single rather than complex? Is there evidence that proto- and ur- language is as much hodge-podge of divergence, reconvergences, and influences as it is first and source language?
It’s got to be fascinating tracing a language’s history back to its deepest roots. I’m interested to know how you will handle PIE, since it’s a reconstructed language and seems to grow retroactively like a reversed living-language developed by philologists. How will you resolve the problem of “deepest roots of English” if PIE is only as far back as we’ve explored in language?
